This is a black and white image of the More Barn in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The barn is often called the Steamboat Barn because of a 1972 poster titled The Steamboat Barn, that depicted two riders on horseback with snow skis around the barn. The poster was used to market the new Steamboat Ski Area.
Steamboat Springs has been blasted with a lot of snow this year. I wanted to incorporate that in to the photo of this old barn. Walking on a ridge of semi compacted snow I was able to reach this point. I wanted to capture the texture of the fresh snow and saw the two lines created in the lower right corner of the frame and decided to use those as leading lines to point the viewer’s eye in the direction of the barn. The sky was mostly cloudy with patches of blue to the right of the frame. Each time that the clouds appeared to be moving in the frame with those blue patches, the blue faded away, leaving just the cloudy skies behind the barn. I needed to position myself in a way to capture the barn without capturing the urban development that is occurring on the adjacent property. Although the image was captured in color, there was a lack of color visible that day because of the clouds and and haze. Viewing the capture in my viewfinder, I knew this would be converted to black and white.
